On January 26th, 2005 Lakewood Engineering and Manufacturing Company of Chicago, IL announced a recall of approximately seventy thousand (70,000) of its Model 5101 Electric Heater due to rupturing. Your electric space heater may fail to work for a number of easy-to-fix reasons. Most space heaters have an automatic shut off that is activated when the heater tips over or gets too hot. There can also be a problem with the wall electrical outlet or your home's electrical supply.

WASHINGTON, D.C. - The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission announced the following recall in voluntary cooperation with the firm below. Consumers should stop using recalled products immediately unless otherwise instructed. It is illegal to resell or attempt to resell a recalled consumer product.
Name of product: Model 5101 oil-filled electric radiator heaters
Manufacturer: Lakewood Engineering & Mfg. Co., of Chicago, Ill.
Hazard: Welds can rupture, expelling hot oil that can burn nearby consumers.
Incidents/Injuries: Lakewood is aware of 28 reports of incidents, including one burn injury from spewing oil. An additional 14 heaters with ruptured welds have been returned to Lakewood.
Description: The recalled heaters are portable electric radiator-style heaters with six fins, one of which has the control panel attached to it. The units are grayish-white in color and have the name 'Lakewood' printed below the handle indentation on the control panel. The model number '5101' is printed on the UL label on the lower right side of the control panel.
Sold at: Retailers nationwide, including Wal-Mart and Ace Hardware, from August 2004 through November 13, 2004 for between $34 and $40.
Manufactured in: United States.
Remedy: Consumers should immediately stop using these heaters, unplug, disable and discard them. The firm is out of business, and a remedy is no longer available.

Name of product: Space Heaters Units: 186,000 Distributor: Lasko Products Inc., of West Chester, Pa. Hazard: The power cord connection can overheat and cause the cord to separate from the space heater. This poses a fire, burn and shock hazard. Incidents/Injuries: Four consumers reported burned and detached power cords. No injuries reported. Description: There are two types of heaters involved in this recall. The recalled model 5500 heater is an oscillating ceramic heater with dark grey vents surrounded by a bronze trim.
The model number is located on a label under the round base. The Model 5700 heater is an oil filled radiator-type heater. The model number is located on a label on the side of the heater near the right front wheel. The name 'Lasko' is printed near the top of both heaters. Sold at: Retailers such as Dollar General and Sam's Club stores nationwide from July 2001 through December 2003 for between $40 and $50. Manufactured in: Model 5500 - China; Model 5700 - Portugal.
